International Walk to School Day
International Walk to School Day on October 5 will highlight the retro travel mode of walking. With physical fitness as a key focus, Walk to School events are designed to reduce traffic congestion and emphasize the importance of pedestrian and bicycle safety, while building connections between families, schools and the broader community. Several dozen schools in Central Oklahoma are planning activities as the annual public awareness event grows in popularity. Visit walktoschool.org for details on Walk to School Day activities and to register your school.
The National Center for Safe Routes to School, the organization which provides technical support and resources and coordinates online registration efforts for U.S. Walk to School Day and facilitates worldwide promotion and participation, has developed new resources, including a logo, event fliers, stickers and banners, featuring the 2011 Walk to School Day slogan. The National Center will roll out new “Hike it. Bike it. I like it!” materials leading up to this year’s celebration on October 5.

Trash No Place for Hazardous Waste
CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamp) light bulbs use less electricity than regular bulbs and last a lot longer.
While they are better for our environment, these light bulbs can be hazardous to throw in the trash.
Ultra energy efficient, these bulbs contain a high amount of mercury that can contaminate the environment and should be disposed of at the local Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at 1621 S Portland in Oklahoma City.
Additional items accepted at the facility include household cleaners, paint, propane, oil, brake fluid, pesticides, fertilizer, and pool chemicals. The facility is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m.
Bethany Residents may use this service at no charge.
